Sustainability

Join us in our journey towards a more sustainable world as we mitigate our environmental impact and strive for Net Carbon Zero by 2038

Our Pledge:

At Leigh Sports Village, we are dedicated to reducing our environmental footprint across our sports, events, health and educational programmes. By embracing change and exploring new strategies and initiatives, we aim to significantly lower our overall environmental impact. As part of this commitment, we pledge to achieve Net Carbon Zero status by 2038, in alignment with Wigan Council.

In 2025, we proudly received a Bronze certification from Greengage for our existing environmental and sustainable initiatives, illustrating our commitment to driving environmental change.

Our Priorities:

Energy and Water:

  • We are prioritising beginning to measure our carbon footprint under Scope 1 and Scope 2, to understand how we can mitigate our carbon output.
  • We are looking into a full stadium lighting upgrade, building on our current LED initiatives and utilising the latest technologies.
  • Our team includes designated energy champions, who’s responsibility is to ensure the reduction of energy use across the different areas of site.

Building Infrastructure:

  • Incorporating a Building and Energy Management System upgrade into our stadium.

Rooms and Facilities:

  • We are looking into smart socket options for small power electricals throughout our site.
  • Reviewing the potential implementation of measurable energy AI-powered smart socket technology across the business, to reduce small power consumption.

Waste Management:

  • Waste is segregated for recycling with zero waste to landfill.

Food and Beverage:

  • Our Operations and Catering teams are Guardians of the Grub Champions, mitigating food wastage.
  • We use lots of local suppliers and are committed to continuing to do so for our food and beverage offerings across our events. Examples of these are: Exchange Coffee based in Blackburn, Ribble Farm based in Preston, and Cheshire Farm Ice Cream based in Cheshire.

CSR:

  • We will raise the sustainability awareness of our staff, visitors, communities and stakeholders by promoting the concept of sustainable development and by openly recognising and promoting a better understanding of the on-going need to move towards a more sustainable future.
  • We recognise the importance and urgency of addressing climate change. We want to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and also adapt to the unavoidable consequence of climate change.
  • We recognise our sustainability obligations to our staff, visitors, communities, stakeholders and other interested parties, and to present and succeeding generations.
